Art in Our Federation: Be the Light – Create, Express, Inspire

Art in our Federation is a vibrant and inspiring journey that begins from the very start of a child’s educational experience. In the EYFS, children are encouraged to experiment, explore, and play with a wide range of materials. They learn to make choices, take risks, and express themselves freely. From finger painting to junk modelling, our youngest artists begin to develop confidence and creativity, building the foundations of their artistic understanding.

As pupils progress through school, so does the sophistication of their artistic knowledge, skills, and techniques. Our curriculum is carefully structured to ensure that children revisit and build upon key concepts such as colour, form, line, texture, shape, pattern, and space. They explore an increasing range of tools and media, from drawing and painting to collage, printing, sculpture, and digital art, developing mastery and independence in their artistic practice.

Our art curriculum is deeply connected to the wider world. We draw inspiration from great artists, designers, and craft-makers from different cultures, time periods, and traditions. When children learn about Italy in geography, for example, they also study the work of Michelangelo, exploring how culture and environment influence artistic expression. These meaningful cross-curricular links help children embed skills, deepen understanding, and see how art connects with history, geography, literacy, and beyond.

Creativity thrives when pupils see themselves as real artists. We provide rich opportunities for children to share and celebrate their work, whether through classroom galleries, school exhibitions, or community events. We regularly take part in local exhibitions and competitions, helping pupils develop pride in their achievements and understand the power of art to communicate, inspire, and make an impact.

Throughout their journey, children learn not only how to create art, but also why art matters. They develop the ability to evaluate and reflect on their own work and the work of others, building vocabulary, confidence, and a sense of artistic identity. They come to see art as a way to express ideas, emotions, and perspectives, and as a vital part of understanding the world around them.

Our curriculum aims to nurture imaginative, thoughtful, and courageous creators. Through art, we encourage children to look closely, think critically, and respond creatively. We want our pupils to be the light: to shine with imagination, to express their unique voices, and to inspire others through the power of creativity.
